Bio

Nick Mariette is a Sydney-based DSP engineer with over five years' work experience in spatial audio. Nick has held a keen interest in electronic music since the ripe young age of four when he first heard (and loved) the robotic timbres of Kraftwerk's Man Machine album. Following this interest, Nick has experimented for many years with new techniques in audio synthesis, producing experimental sound works and creating new audio effects.

Since 2001, Nick has worked with the Pure Data software DSP environment to prototype novel audio effects for use in experimental sound design. In 2002, Nick designed and released a complex stereo granular synthesis "patch" to the Pure Data online community.

In October 2003, at the Electrofringe festival in Newcastle, Nick co-presented a session on "Advanced Patching Techniques". Nick co-presented a similar session at Electrofringe 2002.

Here are some websites that mention the 2003 Electrofringe Advanced Audio Patching session: The Electrofringe program, This Is Not Art festival program", and Analogik.com Forum.

Brief professional resume:

In 1998, Nick gained a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering (Hons 2.1), specialising in audio DSP, producing an undergraduate thesis on the synthesis of binaural 3d audio. From 1999 to July 2003, Nick worked at Lake Technology Limited - an Australian company producing world-leading spatial audio technology. In this time, Nick coded commercial spatial audio software products, became an expert on Lake's spatial audio processing hardware and designed spatial audio systems for virtual reality centres in Australia and overseas. Nick is now seeking to continue research and development of cutting-edge digital audio technologies.

Pure Data

Pure Data is an open source, media processing software environment available for Windows, Linux, Mac OSX, SGI IRIX and possibly also other operating systems.

Some useful websites about Pure Data:
Pure Data dot Org
Miller Puckette's Pure Data website

Nick is involved with the Sydney based Electrofringe Patchers group involved with experimentation in collaborative performance with object-patcher-paradigm media processing software environments.

Granular Synthesis

I have a page featuring various explorations in granular synthesis here.

Sound Design

Entered a soundtrack into the 2003 Mafia Soundtrack Awards. Nick did complete production for this soundtrack including all recording and mixing of foley for this 3 minute short film. The musical bed used for the soundtrack was another engineer's (copyright free) recording of a performace of Arvo Part's Tabula Rasa by music students (including Alice Mariette) at University of Sydney in 2003. Nick also performed sections of granular synthesised musical bed for the soundtrack.

Nick designed the sound for the CRS Digital flash website mainly using Pure Data.

Some older electronic music compositions by Nick Mariette may be found here at my old mp3.com website.
